Etsy fees for 3D print sellers, explained
"Etsy takes a cut" is doing a lot of quiet damage to 3D-print shops, because it's not a cut — it's three separate fees that stack, plus two optional ones that ambush sellers who don't know the rules. Here is every fee that can touch a 3D-print sale, with the real numbers.
The three fees on every sale
1. Listing fee
Charged when you create or renew a listing, and again for each unit sold from a multi-quantity listing. On a $10 print it's 2% by itself; on a $50 print it's negligible. This is why fees punish cheap items hardest.
2. Transaction fee
The big one. Note the trap: it's charged on shipping you collect, too. Charge $5 shipping and Etsy takes another $0.33 from it. Offer "free" shipping and the fee vanishes — but you've absorbed the label cost instead. Either way, it comes out of your margin.
3. Payment processing fee
What Etsy pays the card networks, passed to you. The $0.25 flat part is why splitting one $40 order into four $10 orders costs you an extra $0.75 in fees.
What that actually adds up to
Assuming free shipping (no shipping charged), here's Etsy's total take at typical 3D-print price points:
| List price | Etsy takes | Effective cut | You keep (before costs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10.00 | $1.40 | 14.0% | $8.60 |
| $15.00 | $1.88 | 12.5% | $13.12 |
| $20.00 | $2.35 | 11.8% | $17.65 |
| $30.00 | $3.30 | 11.0% | $26.70 |
| $50.00 | $5.20 | 10.4% | $44.80 |
The pattern matters: cheap items get taxed hardest. That $8 keychain isn't a volume play — after fees and costs, it's often the worst margin in the shop. If you sell low-priced items, bundle them.
The two fees that ambush sellers
Offsite Ads — 12% or 15%, but only sometimes
Etsy advertises your listings on Google, Facebook, and elsewhere. If a buyer clicks one of those ads and buys within 30 days, Etsy takes 15% of the order total — or 12% if your shop made $10,000+ in the last 12 months. It applies to the entire order, not just the advertised item.
Etsy Ads — optional, pay per click
Etsy's on-site advertising is strictly opt-in: you set a daily budget and pay per click, whether or not the click converts. Treat it as a marketing line item, not a per-sale fee. New shops should get pricing right before spending on ads — advertising a listing priced at a loss just loses money faster.
How fees change your minimum price
Your break-even price isn't your cost — it's your cost grossed up for fees. With $7.17 in production costs and a $4.50 label (free shipping), break-even isn't $11.67. It's the price P where P − (0.45 + 0.095P) − 11.67 = 0, which is about $13.39. Every dollar below that is a donation to your buyer.
Fee checklist for 3D-print sellers
- Price every listing after the three standard fees, not before.
- Remember the 6.5% hits shipping charged — model "free shipping" as a cost, not a discount.
- Keep margins above 15% so a surprise offsite-ads sale doesn't turn profitable orders into losses.
- Bundle cheap items: the $0.20 + $0.25 flat fees punish small orders.
- Re-check Etsy's fee pages quarterly — fees change, and stale assumptions silently eat margin.
